DESCRIPTION
This
special home has a unique history.
Located six miles south of
Elizabethtown, the
small hamlet of New Russia once supported three
schoolhouses. This
home, the former District Three Schoolhouse, was built in
1867 and operated as a one room schoolhouse until 1939.
The
property is 1.6 acres along Route 9, and is bordered by
550 feet of riverfront on the east, and the Giant Mountain
Wilderness to the west.
The house offers plenty of privacy, but is a
convenient drive to shopping, hiking and the county seat
in Elizabethtown.
In
1992, the house was expanded into a modern year-round
home. The
schoolhouse portion of the house, with kitchen, guest
bedroom and bath, retains its original high ceilings,
wainscoting and wide pine plank floors.
One step down leads into the new addition, where
the living room, with a cathedral ceiling, dining room,
master bedroom, bath, closets and laundry room are
located. The
ceilings are whitewashed pine, with exposed Douglas fir
beams. A
sleeping loft above the dining room provides extra storage
or guest accommodations.
The eat-in kitchen was completely remodeled and
updated in 2000.
Skylights
and large windows throughout the house catch plenty of
sunlight and breeze, and provide intimate views of the Boquet
River. With
the windows open you can hear the river babbling as it
flows along through New Russia.
There is a small screened porch which provides a
bug-free place to sit, and beyond the porch is the hot
tub. After a
long day of hiking or skiing the hot tub is just the place
to relax and enjoy the stunning night sky.
The Boquet
River, one of
two rivers which drain the High Peaks, has
been classified by New York State as a Protected
Scenic River.
The Boquet River Association has installed 120’of
protective cribbing along the riverbank on the southeast
corner of the property.
In addition to protecting the house, the cribbing
has created a perfect private swimming hole just steps
from the back door.
Opportunities
for hiking and swimming are close by.
The DEC trailhead to Giant Mountain is just
up the road and the spectacular Split Rock
Falls is just
to the south. The
house is a short drive to Keene Valley, home of
the High Peaks.
Other popular destinations within an hour’s drive
are Lake
Placid, Plattsburgh, the
ferry to Vermont, and Montreal.
This
house makes an excellent weekend or year-round home.
The square footage is small, but the interior is
thoughtfully designed for convenience.
The house is cozy and easy to maintain, convenient
to everything but very private.
