DESCRIPTION
"Summertime"
is a newly renovated 1930's vintage cottage on a
charming lane in the village of Caroga Lake, just a
block from the beach. A great spot for families with
young children, it has a level, grassy backyard for
playing. Our neighborhood association beach has a
shallow, hard-bottom waterfront.
"Sumertime's"
spacious, mahogany-floored screened front porch is
wrapped in sliding multi-light windows on three sides
and windows opening into the cottage itself. Freshly
lacquered and upholstered vintage porch wicker
includes a chaise, sofa, and chairs. Striped cafe
curtains provide privacy on the quiet, friendly
village street.
The 1930's
influenced color scheme for the cottage reflects the
colors of its brilliant perennial flower border. The
exterior is a daisy yellow with green window trim and
shutters, and French doors the color of black-eyed susans. Interior tongue and groove and beadboard pine walls are painted a cream color
with green wood floors and yellow beamed ceilings. Generous
multi-paned windows and ceiling fans throughout circulate cool lake breezes.
The light-filled living room features several entertainment areas. A lounge area facing a flat-screen TV with DVD and CD stereo is furnished with
a leaf green tufted sofa, trapunto-stitched wing chair, vintage chintz
floral drapes with a charcoal ground, bridge lamps, a coffee table, and hand-painted monarch butterfly end tables crafted by a local artisan. Across the room, rocking chairs on a hooked rug make a cozy spot for conversation in front of the free-standing gas fireplace. In another corner, a desk is set up with
WI-FI high-speed internet for your laptop computer. A cheerful red enameled table and chairs
beneath a window are ready for board games, puzzles or dining. A selection of videos, CD's and board
games is provided.
The bright eat-in kitchen has two walls of multi-light windows and antique French doors opening to a
view of the level back lawn with picnic table, fire pit and and gas grill. The kitchen is fully equipped with
all new appliances including an electric range, full-size refrigerator, water cooler, microwave, coffee
maker and blender. Display ledges at the windows add to the ample storage space, which includes
vintage steel cabinets and a distressed-finish buffet filled with a charming assortment of pretty dishes.
Sturdy stainless steel pots, cast iron skillets, baking pans, sharp knives and handy gadgets make this
a cook's kitchen. The beadboard cathedral ceiling is crowned with an enameled Italian tole chandelier
and custom pendant lights with antique glass shades; the floors are wide-plank yellow pine.
"Summertime" accommodates up to six guests in a queen bed, a full and two twins. The
first floor bedroom has a queen bed with a hand-crafted white birch headboard, calico
bed-skirt and a traditional handmade quilt. A ceiling fan and two windows for cross-ventilation provide cooling breezes. A third
window opens onto the living room. This casement window has mirror replacing the glass, for privacy
when the window is closed.
Upstairs, a loft bedroom is lit by casement windows on the gable ends and four skylights for
stargazing. Two antique metal twin beds with their original soft-green paint and
marigold-orange quilts in a print of scattered roses sit under the casement window at the front of the house. Further back, a
double bed is tucked into the eaves under a skylight.
The beds have comfortable new mattresses, feather pillows, fleece blankets and premium quilts from
Pine Cone Hill. You provide sheets, pillowcases and towels. As is customary with camps of this
vintage, bedroom storage space is minimal, with clothes hung on wall hooks or stored in baskets under
the bed. You won't need to bring much with you though. A bathing suit, shorts, t-shirts, jeans and a
sweatshirt are all you need for a relaxing week in the Adirondacks!
The all-new bathroom is located off the kitchen on the main floor, with a shower-tub, low-flow toilet, and a spacious basin sink set into an ebony cabinet. Above the sink, a mirrored
multi-light window is lit with carriage lanterns. High privacy windows offer natural light.
"Summertime" is just around the corner from our
neighborhood association beach on the East Shore Road of West Caroga Lake. Located next to Sherman's, a 1920's vintage amusement park that offers occasional live music on summer weekends, an ice-cream stand, July 4th fireworks and the nostalgic architecture of its carousel and Ferris wheel, our patch of beach is ideal for small children, shallow with a hard, sandy bottom. It's also the perfect place to launch a kayak or canoe, which we are happy to
provide for an additional charge. The beach is a
perfect spot for enjoying the gorgeous sunsets or
stargazing.
"Summertime" has a driveway with parking for
two cars. An outbuilding to the rear of the backyard is our next
"project" - by Summer 2009 it should be available as a separate sleeping cottage with a queen
bed and private bath. For 2008, families or friends vacationing together might consider renting
"Summertime" in conjunction with its next-door neighbor, "Polka Dot" - Listing #
5127, which accommodates
6 - 8 guests in three bedrooms and a separate sleeping cottage.
"Summertime" is within strolling distance of restaurants, taverns, and just about everything else you'd need. Within minutes walk there's a post office,
laundromat, general store, coffee shop, gas, ATM, video rentals and chapel. All the amenities of a friendly, small city are 15 minutes away in the historic sister-cities of Gloversville and Johnstown.
Hiking,
golf, mountain biking and ATV trails, trout-fishing
streams, state hunting land, and gorgeous views from a
mountaintop fire tower are all nearby. The county has
44 lakes to enjoy ranging from small hidden lakes on
hiking trails to the 26 miles long Great Sacandaga.
Centrally
located in the accessible southern Adirondacks, just
30 minutes north of the NY State Thruway,
"Summertime" is a great location for easy
daytrip excursions to Saratoga (Performing Arts
Center, Thoroughbred Racing, and much more), Lake
George, Great Sacandaga Lake, Cooperstown (Baseball
Hall of Fame, Farmer's Museum, Fenimore Museum, Howe
Caverns), the Albany capital region, and much of the
six million acre Adirondack Park, including Blue
Mountain Lake and Tupper Lake, homes of renowned
Adirondack regional museums.
It's about
an hour to Saratoga, Cooperstown, and Albany; about
four hours to New York, Boston, Buffalo, and Montreal.
"Summertime"
accommodates a maximum of six guests at all times.
There is off-street parking for two cars. Sorry, no
pets and no smoking. "Summertime" has a NO
SHOES policy; bring slippers or flip-flops for indoor
use.
