Wind-in-the-Trees is an authentic Adirondack camp built by renowned conservationist John Burnham in 1904, as part of Crater Club, a private club in Essex, New York. Restoration of this expansive two-story camp included a winterized one-thousand square foot master bedroom, kitchen, and living room addition, with HD television, wireless internet, and printer. Bathrooms were also modernized, but the "rustic simplicity" of the original architecture was faithfully preserved. The original camp boasts a great room with working stone fireplace, an enormous screened porch with panoramic views across Split Rock and Lake Champlain to Vermont, five more bedrooms, and two more baths.

With a total of six bedrooms (including two queens) and three full baths (with showers, and a claw foot bathtub under a window), this camp is ideal for two families. A pull-out couch brings sleeping accommodations to 13. In mid-October to May, the camp is limited to six people with one bath. A washer/dryer and fully equipped kitchen can make your stay very economical.

This camp has been in the family for six generations. All furnishings are lovingly maintained (most are antiques) and accented by original artwork. Guests will see evidence of the numerous children that have grown up there, for Crater Club is very friendly to families.

Crater Club is an exclusive 600 acre preserve, and one of only a handful of grand 19th century arrangements that still carry on in the Adirondacks. The Club maintains four clay tennis courts, a swim dock, a boat dock, nature trails, and an historic clubhouse. Potlucks, BYOB's, cookouts, and other socials are open to members and guests during the summer. A supervised youth group (ages 5 - 12) is available on a fee basis during the peak summer weeks, allowing for adults to pursue their own pleasures. Even a lifeguard is on duty at the swim dock during the afternoons.

Numerous activities and events are available in the immediate vicinity. The entire hamlet of Essex is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a short ferry ride from Vermont (see Restaurants and shops are there and in nearby Willsboro and Westport. The celebrated string concerts at Meadowmount during the summer are less than 10 miles away; Montreal is a day trip. Of course, hiking and climbing in the mountains are unparalleled. Reading a good book or listening to loons call from the lake make for peaceful days. For winter activities, Lake Placid/Whiteface is only a 45 minute drive. Stowe, Vermont is approximately an hour's drive after the year-round ferry crossing from Essex to Charlotte. The Club's nature trails afford excellent cross country skiing or snowshoeing.

If you want to enjoy a true Adirondack experience and in a very convenient setting, call or email for more information and availability.

Descriptions of photos:
1) The expansive front porch has a tremendous view. It has been the favored location for parties, late night card games, or reading a book while swinging in the special chairs facing Split Rock.
2) The winterized addition in the rear is recent, but note how its architecture blends in with the original John Burnham camp that is over a century old. Wind-in-the-Trees blends modern comforts with the traditions and history of an authentic Adirondack experience.
3) The view from the front porch - Crater Club nestles in the Lake Champlain Valley, between the High Peaks of the Adirondacks and the Green Mountains of Vermont, which are only a short 30 minute ferry ride away.

The grand screened front porch is complete with 1930's furnishings.

The Burnham-designed great room includes rare "golden birch" posts and other original furniture. Just out of this picture is the swinging settee in front of the working stone fireplace. Fires are common for chilly Summer nights.
