When you choose to vacation in the Adirondacks, you're choosing a 6 million acres state park made up of privately and publicly owned land. In fact, the Adirondack State Park is the largest wilderness area in the lower 48 states. Raquette Lake, with 99 miles of shoreline, 80% of which is owned by the State of NY, is amazingly undeveloped. The State land is constitutionally protected from any kind of development, "forever wild," so you'll see mostly shoreline, woods and wildlife. Outdoor recreation opportunities abound in spades: canoeing, kyaking, hiking, camping, fishing, swimming, skiing/boarding and boating. There are other forms of entertainment as well. Be sure to make reservations for a scrumptious meal (lunch, dinner or Sun brunch) on the WW Durant, while also listening to the captain's fascinating historic commentary. Take the guided tour of the Alfred Vanderbilt estate, Great Camp Sagamore, followed by a self-guided tour of the Adirondack Museum, to get a more complete picture of the way residents and visitors lived, worked and played during the Gilded Age in American history. Two Arts Centers bookend Raquette: View in Old Forge and the Adirondack Lakes Center For the Arts in Blue Mt Lake. Take a day trip to the Wild Center in Tupper Lake, the Winter Olympic venues in Lake Placid, the Dude Ranch scene in Lake George. |
