Description:
Balsam Lodge is a wonderful historic home on the shore of pristine and beautiful Loon Lake. This is a great place for family reunions or other big groups. There are 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms so no need to share 1 or 2 bathrooms between 10 people. The original windows, woodwork and fixtures throughout give this home a lot of charm. Large hideaway doors and amazing windows are just a couple of the many highlights. You will also love the many porch areas that overlook the lake, both screened in and open. There is even a 2nd floor screened in porch which is a wonderful place to take in the views of the lake. There is a fire pit down by the lake and also a dock for easy access to the lake. We provide 3 kayaks, 1 canoe and a small sail boat for exploring the lake. Feel free to bring your own personal water crafts but we cannot allow outside motorboats of any kind, no exceptions. The lake is best explored by Canoe or Kayak anyways. The water is crystal clear and refreshing making for some great swimming. In addition to private access from our dock, you can also use the shared beach which is a very short walk from the front door, maybe 200 feet. The shared beach has excellent swimming with a large shallow sandy bottom area and a swim float. Go fishing on Loon Lake for Large Mouth bass, Small Mouth bass, Northern Pike and tastiest of all perch! There are also places to fish for trout within 10 minutes. There are thousands of acres of state land a stone's throw away. At the north end of the lake, you can hike up Crusher Mountain in about 30-40 minutes and if you are more adventurous make a day trip of Loon Lake Mountain which is about a 6 mile round trip.

Balsam Lodge (circa 1899) was one of the original cottages built on a lot leased by Loon Lake House. The hotel was one of the premier resorts in it's time and was host to three US Presidents, artists, musicians as well as many other prominent people of the time. Rumor has it that Irving Berlin (composer known for God Bless America and White Christmas ) was a visitor of Balsam Lodge and may have played the piano that is still there for your enjoyment. Balsam Lodge has retained much of it's charm including the massive Great Room, claw foot tubs and the spacious wraparound first floor porch for relaxing and dining. An additional second floor porch provides one of the best views on the lake.

Take a day trip to Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, Tupper Lake (the Wild Center) or even Montreal. There are some great restaurants in town, lots of cool shops and many tourist attractions. Maybe take a trip back in time and ride the rails on the ADK Railroad. The Wild Center is a nature museum which is fun for the whole family and is located about 35 minutes away. Even closer is the Paul Smith's Visitors Interpretive Center which is a great place to see wildlife in nature and learn about the local ecology. We have a TV with a DVD player and basic satellite reception. There are board games and jigsaw puzzles. I could write for days about all of the things you can do while staying at Balsam Lodge, but instead I will leave a little to your imagination. One thing that is for sure, you will have an awesome vacation! .
