Lake Placid and High Peaks Region Vacation Rentals — LISTING ID: VR5186
Welcome to AuSable Camp, our vacation home in the Adirondacks. At AuSable Camp, you have the best of both worlds. During the day, you hike the High Peaks and at night you watch movies on a flat TV screen after a candlelight dinner and a breathtaking sunset.
AuSable Camp is a sunny, cozy two bedroom cottage on a 12-acre property facing Bassett, Wainwright, Rattlesnake, and Ebenezer Mountains. We enjoy 1,500 feet of river frontage on the East Branch of the AuSable River 300 feet from … the house. We share our 12 acres of woods and fields with deer, foxes, coyotes, otters, beavers, and birds. We are located in the town of Jay, NY.at the foot of the Jay Mountain Range. There is a very secluded swimming hole upstream within walking distance from the house.
AuSable Camp has panoramic doors and windows on all sides, with stunning sunset views in all seasons. Amenities include a wraparound porch and an outdoor grill for Summer dining; a well-equipped kitchen with central island, dishwasher, microwave; washer and dryer; a fireplace in the living-room; a king-size bed with panoramic view in the master bedroom; two twin size trundle beds in the loft bedroom; cedar paneling in the bathroom (see more photos on website mentioned below).
At AuSable Camp, life is secluded, peaceful and yet close to many famous Adirondack attractions such as the Jay Rapids, High Falls Gorge, The Flumes, Santa's Workshop, AuSable Chasm, Whiteface Mountain, Mount Van Hovenberg, the Adirondack Mountain Club, the 46 High Peaks, and the Olympic Village of Lake Placid.
In the Summer, alpine ski trails give way to rugged mountain bike paths. Frozen lakes and rivers become an exciting network of canoe and kayak waterways. Backcountry ski trails transform into fascinating day hikes.
With over 1,500 lakes and ponds, hundreds of miles of canoe routes, 46 major peaks over the 4,000 feet elevation mark and over 2,000 miles of biking and hiking trails, the Adirondack Park is, quite literally, a 6 million acre playground and sports paradise.
Right at AuSable Camp, there is fishing, swimming, tubing, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing right on your doorstep, unless you prefer bird watching, sunbathing, stargazing, relaxing and enjoying the view.
The AuSable River, world-renowned for fly fishing, is one of the top 20 trout fishing rivers in the country. There is a secluded swimming hole within walking distance. In the winter, you can snowshoe or cross country ski for several miles right on the property.
In the village of Jay, just two miles away, you can visit the Old Covered Bridge and frolic in the Jay Rapids, named recently the Best Rural Swimming Hole in the nation by Sports Women Illustrated. On Saturday nights, you take your lawn chair to join the town's residents for the free Summer concerts on the Village Green. You can also visit the arts and craft fairs, the artists' workshops and galleries, the farmers' markets and the garage sales in the area. Jay has a long tradition of being a haven for artists and writers. Ogden Stewart of "Philadelphia Story" fame lived right on this property and Rockwell Kent lived in Au Sable Forks.
In the Winter, you can go bushwhacking up the spectacular Jay Mountain Range that is part of the 8,000-acre Jay Mountain Wilderness Area. A 10 minute drive to Keene takes you to some of the most breathtaking vistas and exhilarating activities in the Adirondacks. You can hike up the Nun-da-gao Ridge, a little used and stunning trail north of Hurricane Mountain. The Ridge (high point, 3,090 feet), also known as the Soda Range, follows an arc from Big Crow to the summit of Weston Mountain, overlooking Lost Pond. From Keene, you can also embark on a cross-country ski or snowshoe expedition along the Jackrabbit Trail, a 35 mile trail system connecting Keene to Lake Placid, Saranac Lake and Paul Smiths.
If downhill skiing is your passion, Whiteface Mountain is 8 miles away. It is the only Olympic downhill ski center in the East, with a vertical drop of 3,430 feet. It is the highest point in New York State accessible by car. You can also ride up to the summit via the Cloudsplitter gondola.
Mount Van Hoevenberg, site of the 1980 Winter Olympic Games, is home to the newest combined track for bobsled, luge and skeleton racing. The site provides 35 miles of groomed cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails that are open for mountain hiking in the Summer.
Whether you are looking for a Whiteface Mountain ski chalet, an AuSable River Spring trout-fishing getaway, a High Peaks base-camp for the Summer or a Fall foliage weekend escape, AuSable Camp is a comfortable and convenient base to take in the natural beauty of the Adirondack Park's six million acres Forever Wild. AuSable Camp is the starting point of your Adirondack adventure. When you come:

- Don't miss the community plays and the cultural events at the new Ward Theatre on the Jay Village Green.

“Just returned from a wonderful stay at Ausable Camp. This cozy and charming retreat has all the amenities of home in a serene and peaceful, beautiful setting. Breakfast on the new back terrace was a particular treat; the newly renovated kitchen and bathroom add a touch of sophistication. We enjoyed eating "at home" by candlelight, listening to our own music so much we didn't eat out once! Although we didn't use the loft, we could imagine our kids LOVING IT had they stayed there with us when they were younger....a very "hideaway" feel up there! Finally, the owner is very precise and organized in providing information from details regarding the house and property to suggestions on area restaurants and attractions. The house was immaculate on our arrival, and everything was exactly as she had said it would be, and she remained in contact with us without being obtrusive. A lovely experience, and we hope to return soon!”
“Thanks for your very positive comments. I must say that we have a person who is very thorough in her cleaning practices which I highly appreciate and so do the renters. I do think cleanliness is really a very important feature of any rental property for obvious reasons. I will certainly convey your appreciation of her work to her. Thank you. Thanks also for your comments about the things that could use a little more TLC, as those are the details that help me keep the place as up to date as possible. I must add that my husband and I keep upgrading that little house as if we still lived there. We have a kind of sentimental attachment to the place as we used to come there for week-ends and holidays for a number of years, when our kids were growing up. You are most welcome to come back to Ausable Camp when you long for the peace and adventure that always await in the Adirondacks. Annie”

“My husband, 8 year old daughter and I had a wonderful time staying at the "Ausable Camp". Annie has stocked the camp with tons of information about the surrounding area. The home is cozy, welcoming and is truly a place to relax and get away from it all. It's location allows for easy access to all of the areas attractions and is a wonderful home base. We truly enjoyed our stay and hope to visit again soon.”
“I am glad to see that you and your family enjoyed your vacation at the camp. It is always a pleasure for my husband and I to welcome families, such as yours, who appreciate and respect their surroundings. Thank you for being such accommodating guests and leaving the place in perfect order. I suppose the whole family has now returned to their everyday routine. You know you are always welcome to come back to Ausable Camp whenever you wish to get away from it all and long to return to the Adirondacks. Have a pleasant fall.”

“ During our two week stay at "Au Sable Camp" we were treated to almost daily visits by deer and wild turkey. Being Master Naturalists and nature lovers, this was particularly enjoyable. The setting was very private and the cabin was very nice with many desired amenities. The location near Jay, NY allowed for side trips in the surrounding area to see other sites and also do some visiting with family and friends. Annie was the perfect landlord throughout - very accessible without being intrusive. We have no reservations with regard to giving our heartiest recommendation to future guests. ”
“Thank you so much for your thoughtful review and your kind words. It was always a delight communicating with you. When you rent a property, you embark on a transaction that must be based on trust and mutual understanding, even if you don't know who you are dealing with at the outset of the exchange. With you, Carol, I could sense a kind of instant complicity. In the 2 weeks you spent at Ausable Camp, you grasped the essence of one of the main assets of the locale, namely the privacy and quietness of the surroundings. The deer and the wild turkeys are never far away. I would also like to thank you for leaving the cottage in such immaculate condition. It was a pleasure hosting you and I hope to welcome you back in the not too distant future. I would certainly recommend you as truly five-star travellers to any future hosts.”

“My husband and I loved staying at Ausable Camp. We rented the cottage for a week, and it was exactly the getaway we were looking for. The place feels private and remote, but is easy driving distance from many surrounding towns, lakes, great river spots and trailheads. During our stay we drove to Keene and Lake Placid a few times, took a short drive to Whiteface Mountain and High Gorge Falls, ate at great restaurants nearby as well as cooked at home a lot, and even easily drove to Lower Saranac Lake for a day of canoeing (which we highly recommend). If you don't want to venture out, just spending the day on the property is peaceful and relaxing. You can walk to and kayak in the river that runs by the house, enjoy the large patio looking out to your own private meadow (sunrise is beautiful), make a fire in the indoor fireplace or in the fire pit outside while star gazing at night, watch a movie on direct TV or a DVD in the comfortable livingroom area, grill outside ... The place is romantic for a couple, but can easily accommodate a family, as there is a great little loft space perfect for kids to sleep and find space of their own. Upon arrival, we immediately felt comfortable in the special cottage and like the place was ours. It is clean, modestly decorated with wood all around and has the feeling of a writer's or poet's haven. The place has a feeling of history, but has a great modern kitchen, a very nice shower, a washer and dryer and everything to make us feel comfortable while still enjoying nature in the beautiful Adirondacks with no one else around. We had the pleasure of meeting the owners the day after we arrived, and they are wonderful and very welcoming. They were always available by text or phone should we need anything or have any questions about the area. We did not want to leave and definitely want to come back to Ausable camp, either just the two of us or with family. Thank you for a wonderful time!”
“Thank you so much Jenn for taking the time to write such a thorough and balanced review. No detail escaped your watchful eye. I must say that you and your husband were the most delightful guests one could hope for. You seemed to appreciate and enjoy all the sights and activities our area of the High Peaks has to offer. You left the cottage in perfect condition. I am looking forward to welcome you back at AuSable Camp. I would certainly recommend you and your husband without any reservation to any future hosts.”

“Thank you so much for the use of your wonderful ADK home. The house was perfect for us! Our girls loved the twin beds in the loft and my son took over the family room. He somehow even managed to sneak his xbox in and hooked it all up! We loved that the home was so modern but still felt rustic and homey. I loved that master king size bed and the view in the morning was...amazing! I loved having my coffee in bed before the rest of the family woke up and watch the deer play in the meadow. Everything in the house was in perfect working order. The home was clean clean clean! The bedding was all quality as were all the furnishings. We loved walking down to the river to kayak, float around in our rafts, and sunbathe on the rocks. We visited Lake Placid, White Face Mountain and even spent the day in Old Montreal! We also loved the little beach in Wilmington. if you will have us we will be back! Thank you,”
“Hi Maisy, Thank you so much for your thoughtful review. When you rent a property you embark in a transaction that must be based on trust and mutual understanding, even if you don't know who you are dealing with at the outset. With you, Maisy, I could feel a kind of instant complicity and I truly enjoyed dealing with you. You asked thoughtful questions about the area and the various activities the region had to offer. I am happy to read that you and your family enjoyed the cottage and the quiet surroundings. You seem to have accomplished a lot during the week you were here. I do hope to be able to welcome your whole family back in the near future. I wish you all a pleasant return to your daily activities in The Rochester area where I spent several years at the University.”

“We were looking for a place away from Lake Placid with some solitude for our vacation; this cottage was perfect for our family of four (children are 12 and 15). We enjoyed eating our meals on the porch, watching deer in the field, hiking in the woods, and kayaking in the river (much thanks to the owner for providing the kayaks). We found it conveniently located to get to all the places we wanted - Lake Placid, Au Sable Chasm, fishing spots, and the Adk Loj. The cottage has a well supplied kitchen (even an ice cream scoop). Upon our arrival, we found the cottage clean with everything we needed plus a special treat in the refrigerator from the owner. Great spot!”
“I could not agree more with your assessment of this particular area of the Adirondacks, although I know I am not totally objective. We had people stay with us from all over the world and I never met anyone who does not not instantly fall in love with the area. The more you know it the more it grows on you. You never finish discovering new spots in the mountains, on the lakes and rivers and new friends in the surrounding villages. It certainly is an area that would deserve to attract more visitors. I am glad you found our little cottage an interesting base for your outings. We would certainly be happy to welcome your family back any time in the future.”

“We were able to secure this cabin for a last minute one-week vacation. The owners were accommodating and very hospitable. It was clean and well stocked. We were pleasantly surprised to see a nice note and some treats in the fridge for us. When they saw that we had two young children with us and would not be able to use the supplied kayaks they made a special trip to deliver a power wheels for the kids to play with (the 4 year old's favorite part of the vacation). The location is well suited for a variety of adventures: close enough to the high peaks for hiking, close enough to Lake Placid for some "city" time. And the open landscape allowed for some great deer watching in the evening as we grilled outside and made s'mores in the immaculate fire pit. ”
“Thank you for your constructive review. The Fischer-Price Jeep is always a big hit with the kids and the parents as well. I am glad you enjoyed the cottage as well as the surrounding areas. You seem to have done a lot of exploring during the week. The kids must have been excited to see the deer. Each rental transaction is an experience built on trust for both the renter and the person who rents. Thanks you for being such good renters and for leaving the place immaculate.”

“We spend three nights over the busy Columbus Day weekend. Despite the crowded trailheads over that weekend, Ausable Camp was a very private and secluded refuge, with no neighbor nearby. In fact, the only human presence visible is route 9N snaking by, which sees very little traffic at night. A long dirt road provides access to the cabin, easily negotiated with the small 2WD vehicles we had. A large deck outside, outfitted with lawn chairs, allowed to put our feet up and enjoy the expansive view over a hay field and the surrounding hills. Inside, the camp is well organized, tidy, and of a pleasant, well-lit, somewhat Scandinavian style. We found all the kitchen tools we needed to cook meals, we enjoyed the fireplace, and loved our evenings there. Our group consisted of 6 adults, and we found it more comfortable to pull out the trundle beds' mattresses and set them downstairs in the living room when time came to go to bed. It worked well for us. Communications with the owner were easy and clear, and she was very well organized and welcoming. The camp provides easy access to the Keene and Keene Valley trailheads, to the Wilmington & Whiteface areas, and to Lake Placid. Don't miss the fresh baked pies from the Noon Mark Diner in Keene Valley!”
“Thank you so much for your very kind words and your very thorough review about our little cabin. Nothing escaped your keen sense of observation. I will make sure to take that into consideration if you ever decide to stay at our cabin again. I wish you a very pleasant Fall season. Thanks.”
