Enjoy the essence of the Adirondacks on Raquette Lake, the largest natural lake in the Park. A short boat ride quickly brings you to our beautiful water accessible, lakefront camp. This intimate setting is located on a six acre parcel of land with hundreds of feet of shore line.
"Beartrap" camp is built on the shoreline with a large screened in porch that sits partially over the water. On the private dock only a few feet from the porch steps, you can relax and take in the views of the surroun …ding mountains, old growth forestry and the water lapping at your feet.
Start your day on the porch with a majestic sunrise, numerous wildlife settings, and a beautiful scene of Beaver Bay with Blue Mountain as a back drop. It's a very enjoyable place to spend your time and eat your meals, while enjoying the incredible surroundings. Loons, ducks, eagles, deer, beaver and many other animals share the water and the thousands of acres of state lands surrounding this lake.
The camp has a full kitchen and is furnished with a microwave oven and all the necessary cooking utensils. A dining area with a paddle fan is an alternative location to the porch in inclement weather. The bedroom has a double bed and large closet. At the end of the day, the living room with a fire place allows an intimate setting in which to relax and read your favorite book. The couch converts to a single bed. A bathroom with a shower completes the floor plan. The electric baseboard heat takes the edge off of a cool night.
We also have available nearby, a two room guest cottage with two single beds and a half bath. This can be rented only in conjunction with the camp rental, at an additional cost for those who need supplementary sleeping capacity.
Our camp is perfect for non smoking mature adults, who obtain pleasure from privacy and enjoy the interaction with an Adirondack environment. For those of you who enjoy a respite from crowds and noise, this is the way to obtain the reprieve you have been seeking.
Walking the short trail to a nearby spring provides a refreshing drink, cold, clear and hearty. A tower on Blue Mountain allows the usage of cell phones, and most emergency needs can be met by the local fire department, which is very responsive and has a medically trained staff.
Many of your requirements can be met at the Raquette Lake Village. It has a post office, library, general store, laundromat, bar/restaurant, scenic boat ride facility, gas station, public dock, boat launch and parking. Also located on the lake are two marinas which provide for all manner of water sports, a few restaurants, public beaches, and historical great camps. Sagamore, one of Durant's great camps, is open for tours and offers various workshops year round.
Centrally located in the Adirondacks, Raquette Lake is a perfect spot to start your explorations or shopping trips. The world renowned Adirondack Museum is a few minutes away. Old Forge with its famous shopping, water park and gourmet restaurants is only a twenty five minute drive. Any perimeter location of the park is accessible in a leisurely day's drive. This includes Lake Placid and the high peaks, the St Lawrence River, Lakes Ontario, George and Champlain, and the Leather Stocking areas including Cooperstown.
There are a myriad of opportunities to enjoy depending on your wishes. Hiking, canoeing, sailing, bicycling, white water rafting, all town yard sales, diamond and garnet mines, various train excursions, Olympic sights and many crafts are only a few of the local attractions. Raquette Lake is one of the lakes traversed during the famous "Classic 90" canoe and guide-boat races. Some of the best fishing is on Raquette, right from the dock or a short boat ride away. Through out the summer, every weekend includes festivities put on by local communities. Your participation is only limited by your imagination.
What do you do at the end of a busy day? Sit on the dock under the clearest sky you can imagine, free of light pollution, and enjoy the spectacle of thousands of stars. The moon rises over the water shortly after dark, red and orange at first, then sending its brilliant reflection across the bay and ending at your feet. The water is usually dead calm and ink black, with a slight warm breeze ghosting over the surface. The lights of a few camps sparkle across the bay, and the night is quiet except for the splashing of fish jumping, the loons sharing their varied repertoire, and the deep base groaning of bullfrogs searching for their mates.
This is the essence of the Adirondacks, sharing and enjoying the beauty nature has provided.
