About Us: We are the 6th generation of the original Dunham family that bought the land and built the Green Cottage in 1873-4. Our families still enjoy the plateau and cottage, but when we can't be there, we offer it for rent. We treat renters as guests of the family - the old tradition of the house. We are pleased that the memories we share of our family gatherings on the plateau can now be experienced as well by other families and friendship groups that enjoy the house now through renting.
Why we think you will enjoy staying in Keene Valley: Not only does KV have more trails to the Adirondack Mts. than elsewhere in the Park, but it is one of the earliest settlements of the first summer visitors, so there is lots of history of notable people who have visited or lived here - from clergy, journalists, authors, philosophers, artists and musicians. But beyond its history and wonderful mountain views, it is still a beautiful small town with a great library, three great eating places & good local grocery, gift and hardware stores.
Why our property is special: The Green Cottage is considered a local historic home as it is the 2nd oldest summer cottage built in the High Peaks village of Keene Valley.....and had some notable guests back then, including Mark Twain, Charles Dudley Warner, Charles Ives, Horace Bushnell and Twain's Hartford hiking buddy, Rev. Joseph Twichell - all guests of what used to be called the Hartford Plateau. The combination of its history, mountains, open plateau and campfire, woods with trails, and big porch make it very special.

“We've stayed in Green Cottage two years in a row now and enjoyed its beautiful setting and rustic charm. The wide wrap around porch is welcoming on both clear and rainy days for games, reading and meals with a direct view of Giant. You can walk to town through the woods or start a hike up Rooster Comb out the back door. The house comfortably fits a large group (we are usually a dozen or more) with a big dining room for meals and a good array of cookware. You might bring a sharp knife. Bedrooms are simple and adequate with a nice third floor "dorm room" that is great for kids. After a hike the two baths can be in high demand but the lovely outdoor shower is often first on everyone's list. On cool evenings a fire in the living room fireplace takes the chill out of the air with plenty of dry wood. The town of Keene Valley and nearby Keene have a good variety of shops and restaurants including the Mountaineer for hiking supplies, Noonmark Dinner for pies, and the Valley Grocery for many staples. The owner is nearby and very helpful if anything comes up. We will definitely be coming back.”
Owner's Response
“With some recent tree clearing, you can now see Hurricane, as well as Spread Eagle, Hopkins and Giant from the front porch ! And there are also a couple of new very sharp knives in the kitchen now plus a knife sharpener for the older knives ! And there are two charcoal grills instead of one now. And fiber optic internet will be in place for 2017. Alice Boutte, co-owner of the Green Cottage”

“ We have rented the green cottage with four other families for five years, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. The green cottage is a family friendly, quiet, serene, and affordable place with a fantastic location for hiking the high peaks. It is relatively rustic, but quite comfortable; providing an authentic and active Adirondack experience. From the green cottage, it is an easy walk through the woods to the playground behind the Keene Valley School and town. Both Chapel pond and the beach across form Marcy field are minutes away by car. You can hike Rooster Comb (and the whole great range if you are really motivated,) as well as Hopkins Mt (across the street and once again, Giant Mountain if you are ambitious) leaving from the porch. Access to dozens of half and full day hikes are all within easy driving distance, and Lake Placid is only a half hour away. After a day's hiking, you sit on one of the largest and most scenic porches in the Adirondacks. We are a group that has varied in size from year to year, but no matter how much gear we bring (bikes, kayaks, packs, boots, and even a bounce house) there is still room under the cover of the porch. And the view is perfect for morning coffee and an evening cocktail. The yard around the Green cottage is big enough for kids to run and play. Our group prepares most of our meals at the Cottage. The kitchen is adequately stocked with equipment for preparing most meals (we bring our own knives and any specialty pot we might need for any particular meal, like a wok for example) the living room is warm and there is a fireplace. I can't say much about the living space, as we spend the majority of our time on the porch. There are two bath tubs inside, but the shower is outside, and is one of the best things about the house. Although there is no internet access, there is strong Verizon 4G connectivity, and a good mobile hot spot can provide good quality streaming videos to several devices and easily can manage emails and Facebook and the like. The green cottage is great place and can provide a wonderful experience for your family or group. On the way home from our annual trip, my kids are already asking when we will return. It is my favorite time of my year, beating out any other holiday. For us the green cottage defines holiday and good times, and is a place that everyone looks forward to every year. ”
Owner's Response
“Since the Ivers wrote their review, we have gotten high speed internet now for the cottage, a couple of new sharp knives have been added plus a knife sharpener, the electricity in the kitchen and pantries has been upgraded and the view from the front porch is wider than ever, so now Hurricane is visible ! Alice Boutte, co-owner of the Green Cottage”
