Situated on 370 acres in the town of Saranac on the south side of Lyon Mountain (one of 100 highest Adirondack peaks), Harvey's Cottage boasts fine views of meadows, forest, and hills from every window in all directions. The 1840s farmhouse was completely gutted and lovingly restored in 1998. A large new wing was built in 2008 in keeping with the old style and doubling the size. We lived in this sweet house ourselves and can attest enthusiastically to its comfort and cheer in all seasons. You can be assured of privacy: on three sides it is surrounded by our meadows and woods. Out front across the road are a neighbor's barns, fields and forest. Two nearest neighbors' homes and barns are visible quite a way off.

Pull into the driveway and park your car(s) in the garage out of the weather--so easy to unload your gear up four steps into the back entry hall, and hang your jacket on a peg. Or you may enter via the front porch into the traditional foyer with large coat closet. Off the foyer to the right is the living room with a large stone fireplace (which now has a more convenient wood-stove insert), comfy chairs, sofa, day-bed, small computer desk, bookcase, and spinet piano. A cozy place to hole up with a good book.

Off the foyer to the left is a commodious kitchen, equipped with pots and pans, plates and bowls, glassware and cutlery, and plenty of windows and light. You may borrow from us what you need and don't find. A farmhouse table seats six, plus there is a high chair. Adjacent to the kitchen, under the stairs, is a large pantry for supplies. From the kitchen enter the dining room. Cooks will appreciate the convenience and gracious style of the sideboard to lay out a meal. Extra leaves may be added to the old oak round dining table.

Off the foyer straight ahead are stairs leading up to the second floor landing. Down a short hallway to the left are two bedrooms (twin and double) that share a full bathroom. To the right is a pass-through laundry room leading to a large bedroom with a queen bed, private full bath, and a large chair with ottoman. There are large closets in each room, plus a linen closet on the landing. From the dining room down a short hallway is a full bathroom, and beyond this a large private bedroom with a queen bed, writing table and chair, and walk-in closet.

The dining room features French doors which open onto the spacious music room with cathedral ceiling and parlor stove. There are several music stands, a six-foot Baldwin grand piano with adjustable bench, a sound system, a sofa, and a day-bed. Two more sets of French doors lead onto a large raised deck, which overlooks meadows to woods to mountains beyond.

Additional amenities include a fieldstone terrace, Adirondack chairs, charcoal grill, and picnic table. Firewood may be provided. There are a couple of rockers on the front porch looking onto a country road with very little traffic. Wildlife is often spied: abundant deer, turkeys, foxes, owls, herons, and the occasional moose. Our property has miles of groomed gentle-grade paths that are wonderful for walking, snow-shoeing, and nordic skiing. We will be happy to acquaint you with the lay of the land.

Our neighborhood is rural and moderately agricultural, with nearest neighbors into small-scale farming (but no manure odors ever!). In the distance you can hear roosters crowing, geese squawking, horses whinnying, cows lowing, and sheep bleating. Locally raised fresh brown eggs, honey, and lamb are readily available. We can direct you to sources of local venison, beef, pork, trout, perch, etc., and we know where to forage for fiddleheads and wild leeks. Locally produced vegetables, fruit, wine, and cheese are available nearby. We ourselves usually raise more vegetables than we can consume, and so are happy to share the bounty of whatever is in season.

Adjacent to our land is the old railroad bed which is popular with mountain bikers, four-wheelers and snowmobilers. A five-minute drive away is a land-trust, free and open to the public, with 87 miles of groomed gentle-grade trails for walking, snow-shoeing, and nordic skiing plus a clubhouse.

It is four miles downhill to the main road, State Route 3, which follows the Saranac River. Here in "The Hollow" you will find two gas stations, a convenience store, a post office, a general country store, a fine-dining restaurant, a historic tavern with good pub-fare, and a couple of diners; also a golf driving range at the campground, tennis and basketball courts at the school, the town pool and boat launch.

Four miles uphill is Chazy Lake, one of the most pristine lakes of the Adirondacks, with two public beaches, picnic area, and two boat launches. A 10-minute drive to Dannemora offers a pharmacy, deli, butcher, bakery, gifts, bank, liquor store, and a Stewarts Shop (great ice cream bar). Adirondack Mountain Club's groomed trails: 10-20 minutes' drive are Lyon Mountain and Silver Lake Mountain; Nature Conservancy's interpreted sites: 20 minutes' drive are Silver Lake Bog and Gadway Barrens. Canada's Province of Quebec is a 20-minute drive, with many charming villages just over the border (bring passports); Plattsburgh is a 30-minute drive; Montreal (QC) and Burlington (VT) are 90-minute drives.

Check-in time is 3:00 pm and check-out time 11:00 am, running Saturday to Saturday. We live in another farmhouse around the corner from Harveys Cottage, and are usually available at home, if any questions or incidents arise. Pet Policy: Dogs and cats are allowed, but at your own risk because of predators and road. Please bring crates for use when animals might be left alone for several hours, such as when you go out for the evening or day-time adventures. Extra pet fee $100 per week per dog or cat (non-refundable) plus additional pet security deposit (refundable) as indicated below.
Smoking Policy: No indoor smoking. Please do not throw cigarette stubs on the ground outside.
Cleaning Policy: This is a lovingly kept home. Please inhabit it respectfully. Cleaning between rentals is included in the rental fee, however, we expect you to leave it as you found it. Please keep it tidy on a daily basis, washing and putting away dishes and sorting trash and recyclables as indicated. We will dispose of trash as needed. Please keep floors and counters clean with provided vacuum cleaner, broom, mop and cleaning supplies. A weekly cleaning and change of linens may be arranged for an extra fee.
Linen Policy: Sheets, blankets, and towels are provided. Beds will be made up when you arrive. It will be helpful to know how many are coming so we can prepare accordingly. A weekly laundering of sheets and towels may be arranged for an extra fee during your stay or you may use the laundry to do your own. Upon departure, please leave beds unmade. Please leave damp towels hanging in bathroom.
Security Deposit Information: $300 refundable security deposit plus additional $200 refundable pet security deposit is required at time of reservation and will be returned 7-10 days after rental period, providing the house was left in good condition.
