| Description: | |
| Serenity. Wilderness. Rustic luxury. These are the words that best describe our year-round log home on Osgood Pond, a secluded lake at Paul Smiths, 10 miles north of the Village of Saranac Lake.
Thanks for considering Twin Pines. First, we want to mention several important things you should know. Twin Pines is a year-round rental with three bedrooms and two full baths. It can accommodate a maximum of six guests. Pets and smoking are not permitted. Were sorry, but we cannot make exceptions to these policies. We hope we can meet your needs. This description is designed to take you on a tour of Twin Pines, but if you have additional questions, please dont hesitate to ask. Twin Pines fills up early so please check the availability calendar. Captions for above photos: #1 - front door and mud room; #2 - the dock and Osgood Pond; #3 - the Great Room fireplace and window wall toward the woods and lake; #4 - the kitchen; #5 - the gazebo off the back deck; and #6 - the lake side of the house. THE SETTING Twin Pines has almost four acres of forest, without another house in view, and 575 feet of lakefront on a sheltered cove. Osgood Pond, described by The New York Times as "a pristine mountain lake," is 1-1/2 miles long, with much of its shoreline forever-wild state land. Bald eagles, loons, otters and beavers make their home here. Several old great camps, one of them the summer residence of Calvin Coolidge, add historic charm to the lake. At the waterfront, youll find a dock, canoe, two kayaks, rowboat and a shallow, sandy swimming area for kids. THE HOUSE As you enter the house through the paneled entryway, you are struck by the two-story window wall overlooking woods and lake and by the massive stone fireplace. Your'e in the great room, a paneled expanse that includes a well-equipped kitchen with island, the eating area, the living area with leather seating, and sliding glass doors to a deck across the length of the house. The decorating, paintings, taxidermy, and collectibles are Adirondack rustic. In the loft you'll find a compact stereo, iPod dock, HDTV with basic cable (about 15 HD channels) and a DVD player. The house has wireless high-speed internet access (bring your own laptop). The master bedroom suite is large but intimate, with its own stone fireplace, four-poster queen bed and walk-in closet. French doors lead to a large, newly-remodeled bathroom with double whirlpool tub. On the other end of the house, youll find the airy Loon Room with queen bed, the cozy Fish Room with twin beds, and a second bathroom. The rooms are named for their decor. The screened gazebo off the deck, overlooking the lake, is a comfortable retreat to watch the woods and read a book. A new mudroom at the front door of the house provides a convenient place to leave your boots and gear. Other amenities include a washer and dryer, Weber grill, picnic table and chairs, croquet, board games, and a sampling of Adirondack books. NEARBY ACTIVITIES Twin Pines has a great location, isolated but close to many attractions. You're in the canoe and kayak hub of the Adirondacks. You can paddle down Osgoods outlet -- a wild river where you'll often see Great Blue Heron, or up its inlet to Jones Pond, or through its tiny canal to two other ponds. You're also on the edge of the St. Regis Canoe Wilderness, dotted with motorless lakes. The hiking is great too, from rugged mountains to the gentle trails at the state Visitor Interpretative Center, only two miles away. The VIC also has great nature programs and a butterfly house. Fishing in Osgood is good, with bass and pike the main sport fish. And a couple of nearby ponds are noted for trout. Interesting golf courses are within an easy drive. Back roads and trails provide excellent biking opportunities. You're 20 miles from Lake Placid, with excellent restaurants and shops, plus the Olympic facilities. Saranac Lake offers antique, art and crafts shops. And if the peace and quiet get to you, you're less than two hours from Montreal. FALL AND WINTER We'd like to put in a plug for fall and winter at Twin Pines. Fall, because most of the visitors are gone and you have the lake almost to yourself. The days are crisp and the colors glorious -- perfect for hiking. Winter, because you're in the middle of a cross-country skiing paradise with miles of groomed and wilderness trails. Snowmobile trails also abound. Lake Placid is at its liveliest as winter sports capital of the Northeast, with activities ranging from bobsled to downhill skiing. After a day of play, you can unwind in the whirlpool, warm your toes by a fireplace, and watch snowflakes float by the glass walls. Twin Pines is not for everyone. If you want speedboats or jet skis, game arcades or t-shirt shops, outlet stores or the party life, look elsewhere. But if you want peace, comfort, and discovery amid the wilderness, you won't be disappointed. We hope you'll come and see for yourself. |
