FACILITIES
Apache is a quiet place where you can re-create yourself energetically or lazily...or both. It's great for families or couples. Children love it. You can hike, bicycle, swim, boat, fish or play tennis here...or you can just relax with a book or take a lazy stroll around the scenic grounds. You breathe fresh mountain air and drink fresh, cold well water. You can do the tourist thing in Lake George Village for a day and then return to peace and quiet around your own campfire.
…
Apache is a snug cottage with frontage on 35-acre Lake Wakonda (aka Smith Pond) and access to Schroon River, a New York State-designated scenic and recreational river. Schroon Lake's boat launch is 3/4 mile away.
The cottage is set in a quiet, private grassy yard which includes a picnic table and fireplace/grill. Firewood is provided.
Lake Wakonda provides opportunity for boating and fishing and for swimming and sunning at a sandy beach about five minutes' walk from the cottage. The lake has a natural population of bass, pickerel, northern pike, perch and catfish. Both a rowboat and a canoe are provided for your use on the lake.
Our residence and Apache are on property adjoining Wakonda Family Campground (a private co-op no longer open to the public). We enjoy free access to the co-op facilities, including tennis court, a softball field, horseshoe pit, children's playground, coin-op laundry, camp store and a lounge with WI-FI access. The campground has a mile and a half of gravel roads good for strolling or bicycling. The public roads in the vicinity are also excellent for walking or cycling. Apache cottage is quite private and separate from the campground.
Cell phone signal strength for T-Mobile, Verizon and ATT is excellent. The cottage has wi-fi and cable TV.
NEARBY ACTIVITIES
Hiking trails in the area range from a half-mile flat trail into Gull Pond to a two-hour ascent to the summit of Pharaoh Mountain. We have maps and trail guides to loan.
Golf is available locally at various levels of quality, from simple to championship.
Horseback riding is about 15 minutes away.
Dining ranges from simple snacking to gourmet. We can provide guidance. One experience you shouldn't miss is dining at Cafe Adirondack, a cozy restaurant a mile from us. The owner presents excellent meals with a Southern touch at moderate cost, and the service is great. (Reservations a must).
Shopping for groceries and routine needs may be done in nearby Chestertown. Lake George Village offers outlet malls and Queensbury offers regular malls and "box" stores.
Antiquing: Nearby Warrensburg is home of the World's Largest Garage Sale in early October, as well as antique shops open during vacation time.
Museums: The newly-renamed Adirondack Experience in Blue Mountain Lake (one hour ride) is a favorite. An hour and a half north of us is the Wild Center (a natural history museum and trails) in Tupper Lake. It is devoted to the natural ecosystems in the Park and is a delight for children. Historic Fort Ticonderoga and its Pell Garden are a three-quarter hour drive from here and well worth the trip. Glens Falls hosts the Hyde and Chapman Museums of art.
Natural Stone Bridge and Caves is a natural wonder right here in Pottersville. They also have a rock shop.
Lake George Village offers lake cruises, parasailing, the Great Escape amusement park and many other tourist attractions.
Lake Placid: The home of the 1980 Winter Olympics is an interesting visit about an hour's very scenic drive away. The 90 meter ski slope tower is open to visitors.
Marlene's Flower Garden: Right across the driveway from Apache you'll find your hostess's extensive flower and water gardens, which attract bees, frogs and all sorts of humans.

About Us: Gene and Marlene Ostertag are the retired former owners of Wakonda Family Campground, which they established in 1971. The campground and its cottages are now a privately-owned cooperative, not open to the public. Marlene is an avid gardener who welcomes visitors to enjoy the beauty of her many flower beds. Gene photographs the flowers and delivers meals to shut-ins in the community.
Why we think you will enjoy staying in Pottersville: Pottersville itself is a small hamlet with one tourist attraction - "Natural Stone Bridge and Caves" - which is deserving of a visit. Other than that, it's a small, quiet place with a few local businesses, three eateries, three churches and a public flower garden which Marlene helps to maintain. We're about a mile out of town, across the Schroon River in a sparsely-settled area that's mostly wooded.
Why our property is special: Four hundred feet of wooded shoreline on Lake Wakonda (aka Smith Pond) afford a quiet privacy that lets you enjoy beautiful sunrises and sunsets, gentle waves or mirror-smooth reflections. Most of our guests express a bit of sadness upon having to leave the fresh air, clean water and serenity that have helped them "re-create" themselves during their stay.
