“My wife and I returned to the Adirondacks for at least the ninth time, this year with our two granddaughters, our daughter, and her husband, who joined us midweek. Without a doubt the Whiteface Meadows Log Home was the best of all of the places we have stayed in those nine visits. It is a beautiful, solid house with plenty of room for the six of us, so much that each granddaughter had their own room, and it could easily have accommodated two more. The kitchen was well equipped - everything we needed was there. We loved the two-storey great room, especially in the evening when we turned on the Christmas lights that lined the stairs and balcony rail. I appreciated the beautiful, heavy blankets on the sofa to keep me warm on a chilly morning. In the basement is a pool table, which converts to a ping-pong table, but we never had the time to play there. The house was always comfortably cool. One night we left all the windows open. The next morning it was cool, actually quite chilly, so we closed things up. The house is so tight that when we returned late in the afternoon the house was still cool. We live on a quiet street in a quiet town in NJ, nothing at all like the soundscapes of urban city life. Nevertheless, the first thing I noticed when we arrived at the house was the silence, the total silence, much quieter than even a quiet town in NJ. That tranquility is so important to me when I want to relax, unwind, and enjoy nature. This place did not disappoint. Many people have a favorite animal - some in my family are especially fond of pandas and penguins. The owners of Whiteface Meadows Log Home clearly love bear. Bear (and other rustic themes) are everywhere, from the smallest detail on bathroom fixtures to wood carvings and other major decorations. The place has the feel of a classic Adirondack camp with lots of rustic elements including the coffee table in the great room, deer antlers, light fixtures, rugs, and more just about everywhere you look. The dining table adjacent to the kitchen had plenty of room for the six of us but we never got to use it as we ate all of our meals at the picnic table on the porch. As it is covered by the porch roof it could even be used on rainy days but that was never an issue for us. The porch wraps around to the side by the great room with chairs to enjoy sunsets and a view of Morgan. We found the location of the place to be ideal - far enough away from Lake Placid that the noise, crowds, and traffic is not an issue, yet close enough to grocery stores, restaurants, and trail heads that the travel time is not onerous. That was not the case at Ausable Acres in Jay where we had twice previously stayed. The additional time to get there was just enough to dissuade trips to certain destinations. Adjacent to the property is a network of trails maintained by the Whiteface Meadows Homeowners Association. While our family was hiking the high peaks, a little to much for my wife and I now, we explored these trails. Along the way we discovered a lean-to and fire pit, a field with Adirondack chairs from which to enjoy a view of Whiteface and Morgan, a beaver dam larger than any I have ever seen, and near the dam a spur trail, which we did not explore. There was no trail map for the network so we hiked the whole thing with a GPS tracker running. I'll send the owner a proper map when I have the time to produce it. On our last night there we hiked to the field after dark. Not far from the property is a small parking area on Lenny Preston Road with a trail to access a fishing spot on the Ausable river. My daughter and son-in-law enjoyed a visit there and came home with two trout for dinner. And just ten minutes away, right at the covered bridge in Jay, is a wonderful swimming area complete with a still-water basin above rapids, slides on the rapids, holes with rushing water that are far better than any Jacuzzi, and rock faces for sun bathing. It is a great place to sooth aching muscles after a climb or to cool off on a hot day. We came to hike, just to hike, not to go shopping, not to explore the Olympic sites, not to engage in any of the typical touristy things that attracts some to Lake Placid. Hiking is all our granddaughters wanted to do and that is all we did. Our first day we climbed Jay Mountain, which is a convenient fifteen minutes away. My son-in-law joined the girls for an overnight backpacking adventure on Mt. Marcy from the Adirondack Loj trailhead while my wife and I relaxed. Another day several of us explored a network of trails on Hardy Road, just seven minutes away. The trails were designed for mountain biking but are open for hiking. On our last day my son-in-law and the girls climbed Hurricane Mountain while my wife and I explored and mapped the association trails. It was a great week. Whiteface Meadows Log Home is fantastic. We loved it. We'll probably return next year if its availability aligns with our schedule. Highly recommended.”

“We went as a family of five to go fishing, hiking, swimming, mushroom picking and and and. The trout fishing was great at the Ausable River. There is an access point half a mile away. The miles of private trails behind the house offered plenty opportunity for mushroom picking. The beach in Wilmington at the town park was far better than expected. And the views from Whiteface Mountain are one of a kind. The cabin itself is very stylish, roomy, and it is quiet around. The owner is very professional in his conduct.”
