The Gate House is a former boat house, built around 1915, that was later converted to a cozy 16' x 24' one-room cabin. Tall pines, hemlocks, and white birches surround the camp, lending an air of privacy. The water is just a few feet from the screened-in porch and a small picnic table on the porch provides a meal with a view. Noisy loons are frequently heard (and seen), as are ducks, seagulls, woodpeckers, chipmunks, squirrels, etc.
Inside, the morning sun is caught by a lakeside picture w …indow, next to which comfortable arm furniture has been placed for maximum enjoyment of the view. On the first level is a kitchenette with pots, pans, utensils and appliances. A dining area, and 3/4 bath complete the downstairs amenities. Upstairs, a very cozy sleeping loft provides four twin beds.

“This "funky" smaller cottage was a great deal! If you are young or young at heart don't pass on it. Take advantage of the sunrise and the moonrise as the cottage faces the east. You are on the water! The sleeping loft has four comfortable twin beds. Don't bump your head on the stairs going to the loft. The sleeping quarters are tight. The landlord is upfront and truthful. Have fun. ”

“My wife and i just left the camp today. Absolutely loved it. Perfect for the two of us. Loft beds were great and the dock was the place to be at night for the stars. Nice and cozy. Definitely would come back. Thank Don.”

“Had a great few weeks at the Gatehouse cabin, very quiet with beautiful views of the lake from the cozy screened in porch where I spent a lot of time, and the large dock. The cabin was well stocked with most everything you need including a good supply of movies to watch on rainy days. Owner is very responsive to any questions you may have. Overall a nice place for a peaceful and relaxing getaway and wouldn't hesitate to return.”

“ Wow! The Gatehouse was even better than we expected. The location directly on the water is a fantastic plus. We so enjoyed sitting on the dock and the screened in porch. The cabin was very clean and everything was in great shape. Plenty of hot water for showers, fire pit ,beach access for our kayaks and private setting. Loons abound. We very much enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to stay again.Great base location for paddling and hiking the various waterfalls in the area. The owner was great in communicating with us. Signs inside the cabin were very helpful. Highly recommend for the price point. Thank you for sharing your cabin with us.”

“The Cabin was clean, Cozy and had all the essentials located directly on the waterfront. Directions to the Cabin were detailed, cabin was easy to find and checking in/out was a breeze. Not only was the Landlord was very responsive to all my questions there was a notebook inside the cabin with instructions on how to operate and the location of everything. Security deposit was return within two days of check out. The price was very reasonable and I would highly recommend this cabin and plan on stay there in the future. The only CON would be the "NO PETS" policy. I have a dog that is every bit part of my family as my children whom I love very dearly. Have to leave him behind is definitely heart breaking and my be the one reason I wiould not stay the in the future. Overall it was a wonderful place to stay and great vacation.”
Owner's Response
“A fine review and we appreciate it. The only note we have is that, if it shows that the guest stayed with us in June of 2016, it was actually this year, 2018.”

“My husband and I enjoyed staying at the cottage on Cranberry Lake. The view from the cottage across the lake was beautiful. Sitting on the dock in front of the cottage was very peaceful. The cottage was comfortable to stay in and had everything we needed to cook. We slept in the upstairs loft and were able to access it easy enough on the retractable ladder. I would love to spend more time there.”

“The Gatehouse has beautiful views from its dock. Looking North there is the hamlet of Cranberry Lake. Looking East across the lake you see the shoreline of the state park and slightly to the right Bear Mountain. Looking South you see Birch Island and more mountains in the distance. The morning sunrise view brings a smile to your face and is very pleasing. The screened in porch is roomy and affords a view across the lake. It is a very short walk from the back porch to the dock. The twin beds are comfortable. The furniture is plentiful but makes for cramped quarters. There are few places to unpack your clothing we found clothing best kept in our luggage. The bathroom is nice but be aware that the water trickles from the shower head. There were holes in the screens of the front and back doors - we solved that problem with duct tape.We saw no critters in the cottage but there is writing on the eating utensils container cautioning you to keep it shut tight to keep critters out. We kept food in critter proof containers throughout our stay. All communication with the owner was timely and informative. Return of the deposit was prompt. The Gatehouse is relaxing and rustic with outstanding views from a great dock it is a terrific value! ”
Owner's Response
“A good review and the management at Gatehouse Industries extends its thanks; and we extend our gratitude to them for taking the time to plug up the holes in the screen. It's been a month or so since this renter visited the Gatehouse, so we have been slow to respond. The only issue that we take with the review is that of the reporting of the slow showerhead. We had to read about it here to find out that there was a problem. As soon as we read this a plumber was called on the scene to unscrew the showerhead, inspect it and clean it out. The problem was fixed within 24 hours of our being made aware of it, but unfortunately not in time for this renter to enjoy the fix. The point of all this is to say that if we were to have heard from them while they were staying there they could have enjoyed a full force shower experience for almost the entirety of their stay, and they would have been able to include in their review how prompt we were in addressing this minor yet bothersome issue. Guests at the Gatehouse are encouraged to immediately report issues with plumbing, electric, or any breakdown of the full function of the cottage that may impact the comfort of their stay. The sooner a problem is addressed the longer our guests will have to enjoy their surroundings without a care.”

“After a long search on the internet we came across this adorable little cabin for rent on Cranberry Lake. It was perfect for our weeks stay!!! Our favorite spot was the dock and the screened in porch overlooking the lake. Lots of fishing, having coffee, dinner, and cocktail hour out there. Owner was very prompt and attentive to answer our questions. Looking forward to going back again. Greeted every evening by the ducks. Lots of hiking, waterfalls, places to see, and paddling on the lake. Great breakfast place and variety store in town! Everything we needed! Fresh air, comfy, and lots of rest and relaxation!!!!”

“My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at The Gatehouse. We stayed during the peak of fall colors and were nice and cozy in the heated cabin. Being right on the water, the spot is beautiful and serene. The cabin itself is old, yet well-maintained. Don was great with communication during our stay as well. I would recommend this cabin to anyone looking for a quiet and cozy escape in a beautiful part of New York. ”

“The place is a classic Adirondack camp. Go here for a no-frills, "right on the lake" experience - it is a beautiful location that is gorgeous at all times of the day, and particularly stunning at night for starry sky viewing. Don was very helpful and accommodating. Lovely in the fall when things are quieter.”

“Our stay was wonderful! The cottage is only a few feet from one of the most beautiful lakes in the Adirondacks. It is perfect for a couple and very comfortable inside and out. We had beautiful weather so most of our time was spent on the dock or the screen porch watching the various activities on the lake. I have nothing but good things to say about the property and the owner! Thank you for a wonderful week!”

“We were looking for a getaway from the hot and humid Long Island and NYC summer, and we found just the right place on Cranberry Lake! The cabin is situated wonderfully allowing you to catch beautiful sunrises...as well as spectacular views of the moon if you are visiting at the right time (we were there for a full thunder moon). The cabin is rustic, and we enjoyed the old time feel. The lake was clean, cool, and refreshing. Make sure to bring a kayak or canoe. We spent many hours paddling around the lake and enjoying the quiet. Fair price and a very nice place. ”

“What a great escape! It was quiet, secluded, the weather was perfect and waking up to that view every morning was fantastic. I met the neighbors nearby and everyone was very pleasant. It was the perfect size for the two of us. Not much around (one gas station and grocery store 15 min away), but that was perfectly fine - as I was not looking to be in a touristy area surrounded by a lot of people. I would definitely recommend staying here and would consider another visit. Thank you for your attentiveness, Don! ”

“I stayed here for two weeks. This cabin is beautifully situated so that one can observe the sunrise and (if the timing is right, which it was for me) the full moon rise. Sitting on the front porch at all hours of the day and night was a favorite activity - listening to the quiet, watching the lake or the sky, hoping to hear a loon (also did this a lot sitting on the dock). It is also very private. A beautiful place to swim as well. It has a old Adirondack camp feel to it; I was pleased not to be connected to wifi or television. Owner was always helpful. I could imagine with more than one person it might feel a bit cramped but if you are outside most of the time that is less relevant. I would rent here again.”
Owner's Response
“The management prefers the use of the word "cozy" to describe the close quarters ;-)”

“We had 2 in our party and was very pleased with our stay. For those looking for a place to stay for the week, this cabin is excellent for a fishing trip for 3 to 4 people. The dock is big enough to fit 2 small fishing boats if needed. In my case, it was my girlfriend and I and it fit us perfect. The cabin is not the best in the area in terms of modernness but you cant beat the price for a week on such a beautiful lake. If you are looking to have a roof over your head and aren't planning to stay in the cabin all day everyday, it is perfect. Cranberry lake has a lot of things to do around it. Tupper lake is only 25 minutes away and Lake Placid is a little over an hour away if you want to travel. The cabins best feature is that it is no more than a few feet from the water. The porch was great which seems to be right over the water. The owner was very good to us. I had countless questions leading up to my trip and he always responded within 24 hours. Also the deposit was sent back to us within the week we got back. You have nothing to worry about if you are afraid of sending money to someone you don't know. I did get in some fishing in and there are some pretty good size small mouth bass and pike in the lake. Got to find the spots though!”
Owner's Response
“This is a great review and I thank my guest for taking the time to submit one. The only comment I as the owner have is about the rustic nature of the place. It is by no means "modern" in atmosphere- it is not shiny and bright and new inside. it is 100 years old and built from rough timbers. It does, however, have most modern amenities- phone, running water and electricity. It does not have tv reception to speak of, nor high-speed internet, and some may miss those things. If you are looking for something brand new and completely in the 21st century you won't find it here. But if you are seeking a more classic Adirondack camp experience our place will go a long way towards taking you back there.”

“We had great weather and a great time at the gatehouse. My 12yr old daughter was not very happy at first without TV or the internet, but the 3 of us spent some quality time together watching some classic movies together from the dvd collection and playing a board game. We also spent a lot of time swimming. We saw a loon and my daughter attracted some ducks to feed. It was great to have the beach right outside the door. Went to the Wild Center(excellent!), had a great dinner in town, and also cooked at the cabin. Took some beautiful pictures of the moon over the lake, it was just awesome! Slept great in the loft listening to the water right outside the window. We also appreciated the owner taking us on such short notice and just a 4 night stay. ”

“This cottage was absolutely beautiful. I rented this out and was totally amazed at the view from the cottage. The whole set-up was gorgeous. The owner is very thoughtful with the set-up of the entire place. I would recommend this place to everyone. Ideally, it was a great time! I look forward to renting the cottage next year.”

“We enjoyed our stay on Cranberry Lake very much. The cottage is small but that was perfect for us since there was just two of us and we spent most of our time canoeing or walking. Being directly on the lake meant we could start the day drinking our coffee on the porch and watching the lake wake up. Everything was clean and working. The only suggestion would be to increase the counter space in the kitchen area maybe to the left of the sink. The trundle beds had new mattresses and were quite comfortable. It looks like the owners have loved this place for a long time.”

“Excellent spot for peaceful lake fun. Sleeps family of four but tight quarters make it most ideal for get away for two. Kitchen and provided cooking utensils an awesome bonus in that all you need to bring is food to prepare. Clean and tidy. Beautiful views. Rustic but not a shanty! Do bring a boat or other water craft to best enjoy the lake.”

“This was an ideal place for a triathlon training vacation for me. Open water swimming right off the dock, beautiful road cycling with sparse traffic, and oodles of trails all around the area. The porch by the lake was very relaxing and cool. The location is also very private. It reminded me of a rustic camp my family had when I was younger so I felt right at home. I would definitely return again.”

“Our recent stay at The Gatehouse was all that we could have asked for. A cozy place right on the water, with a lovely screened porch and adequate sleeping room for 3 adults and a three-year-old. If you're looking for fancy, this is not it, but if you're looking for a roof over your head at night, a kitchen where you can prepare meals, ease access to the water and nature, and even an outdoor fire pit, then this is the place for you! There are a couple of things that I especially appreciated: the ability to rent for less than a full week (this is hard to find), and a very responsive and helpful owner. It can be a leap-of-faith to send money to a total stranger, but this owner is entirely above reproach. Honest to a fault - I was very impressed by his integrity and his quick replies to my smallest questions. Bottom line is, if you love Cranberry Lake and just need a place to call home for several days, you can't go wrong with The Gatehouse. I'm looking forward to our next stay!”

“My son and I stayed for a long weekend at Gatehouse. We had a great time and the size was perfect for us for the 4 night stay. It was nice to be so close to the water for the sunrise as well as listening to the lake at night. Did a lot of fishing and even caught some bullhead off the dock at night while enjoying a fire by the lake. My son loved sleeping in the loft and the camp had everything we needed. Will definitely be wanting to return to the gatehouse. ”

“We (four mature women) recently stayed at this cabin. We had a wonderful time. The lake is beautiful and clean with some sandy beaches which we pulled up on with our kayaks. The cabin is snug and has everything you need and is right on the water with a great screened in porch and a dock which we thoroughly enjoyed sitting on while eating breakfast and watching the sunrise.. There is a small sandy beach for your kayaks. If you enjoy moonlight kayaks this is the place for you. It is quiet and peaceful. I would definitely go back. ”

“ The Gate House Cottage was clean and cozy. The location and views are just spectacular. Waking up to a view overlooking Cranberry Lake and Bear Mountain is just breath taking. The cottage was conveniently stocked with just about everything you need. There is a nice dock right out back to relax on. We also loved the fact we could dock our fishing boat and kayak right behind the camp. Excelent! We can't wait till go back again!”
