MOUNTAIN HOUSE"MARCY OUTLOOK"

Essex County

Lake Placid and High Peaks Region Vacation Rentals — LISTING ID: VR7913

This all-season house is located on Keene Valleys Johns Brook Road a mile from the village and quarter of a mile below the Garden, one of the two main trail heads in the high peaks region. The site is a particular boon when the Garden parking lot is full and hikers have to use the satellite lot. The house adjoins the original "Marcy Outlook", where guests at Interbrook Lodge came for after dinner walks to "say goodnight to Marcy" The core of the house is a living room with a large stone fireplace and a kitchen/dining area. Both open onto a large deck with a picnic table and Adirondack chairs. The living room picture window frames a view of Marcy, as does the picture window in the master bedroom. Beyond the kitchen/dining area are three bedrooms and a laundry/storage room (washer and dryer). A separate wing, reached through the entry hall behind the living room, is a large master bedroom with its own fireplace. There is an excellent stereo sound system. The house sleeps seven, and all but one bedroom have mountain views. Twin beds in three of the rooms can be converted to king upon request. There are one and a half baths. (The half bath is not winterized.) Begun in 1950 and expanded in later years by Landon (Rocky) Rockwell, an avid mountaineer, it continues to be used by family as well as offered for rentals. The books, paintings and photos in the camp reflect the original owner's lifetime of mountaineering. Audible below the house, John's Brook can be reached by a climb down the bank. The nearby village of Keene Valley offers great food, a renowned mountaineering store, an excellent hardware store, a wonderful library (with wifi) and a beautiful village church which often hosts concerts. The village now has cell phone coverage which reaches the house on a somewhat spotty basis; Verizon Mifi connection is similarly available.

Note: During July, August and September we generally only rent on a Saturday to Saturday weeklong basis until a month before the requested date. In other words, if you wanted to rent for the weekend of August 15th we would make that weekend available as of July 15 if it had not yet been rented as part of a week long rental. Occasional adjustments are made on a case by case basis.

Note: The cabin is in the woods. Wood mice are everywhere. We work hard to keep the cabin mouse free, but the occasional mouse slips through. This is the reality of Adirondack cabins. If you see one, or signs of one, you can ask the caretaker to come set traps. We ask that you not book the cabin if seeing a mouse would feel unmanageable to you. We need this to work for everyone.

Meet the Owner(s)

About Us: We have been coming to the Adirondacks since the cabin was built in 1950 by Landon ("Rocky") Rockwell, an avid mountaineer who hiked in the Adirondacks, the White Mountains, the Canadian Rockies and the Swiss Alps and trekked in Tibet and Nepal. The "we" now stretches to a fourth generation. Recent renters spent their evenings in front of the fire reading Rocky's "Along the Way", tales of his mountain adventures. Most renters enjoy stepping into the history reflected in the cabin.
